I'm a Scholar of Modern American Culture My entry into this field was through a prolonged and haphazzard “study” of rebellion. This was a self taught lesson in what it means and what it takes to be scholarly. I felt as if I had failed as more and more people of various influence began to react to my work as “funny,” but had I really failed? If there is no room in scholarship for entertainment, maybe I don't want to be a scholar. If my work has to bore the minds out of people in order to be scholarly, I'll wear my failure as a badge of honor. With my natural bent toward things rebellious, part of me looks at this SMAC effort as reclaiming scholarship for the common man. So I ask you all to become scholars of modern American culture with me.
The name SMAC was the brainchild of some college friends of mine and I was merely something of a brain first-cousin-once-removed. My contact was just enough to legitimize my use of this name, I think I was recruited and volunteered to hold the title of secretary or treasurer. Either way I did little or nothing at the time other than be an encourager perhaps, but deep down my involvement must have touched a chord. The name SMAC called to me out of this past, and I realized this was the outlet for which I was looking.
