A Flower in San Diego

The flight out of San Diego took off over the Pacific. I looked for the whales I knew to be a few miles off shore, but did not see any. As I looked out at the islands off the coast I was seeing the furthest west I've ever seen. By happy accident I was sitting by a right–hand window and the plane turned left as it 180–ed to head back east. This gave me not only my last view of the Pacific, but also my first of Mexico and the sun reflected off it's Gulf of California. It wasn't until a couple of days later when I looked at a map that I was convinced of what I had seen. By the way, does anyone know what these triangles are?

Now I am back in Maryland far from the sounds of the surf which lulled me to sleep each night in Carlsbad. Thoughts of Florida in January which haunted me for a long time after my January 2000 trip to Orlando have now been replaced by thoughts of San Diego. Perhaps San Diego won out because this January while I was basking in 70 degree weather, even Florida along with the rest of the nation was so very cold.
