Lungkwitz's Enchanted Rock
During my few days visiting with family north of Austin I took a day to drive through the part of Texas my great great grandfather Hermann Lungkwitz, the landscape artist, loved so well. My stops included Hamilton Pool, Pedernales Falls, Fredericksburg, and Enchanted Rock. But before I could make it to any of these stops, I inadvertently got onto Hwy 2769 and Lime Creek Road passing through the community of Volente on the shores of Lake Travis. As I traveled through the rocky terrain I was reminded of Greece's hilliness and relatively sparse vegetation. So when, after finding my way back onto the route I intended and coming across a vineyard, I decided to stop and taste some wine to mark the occasion. With each trip I make to Texas I try to find one more thing to do which connects me more intimately with this state, my von Rosenberg home. Seeing these places in person which Lungkwitz had visited and lovingly committed to canvas was a perfect addition to my already pleasant road trip. I'm afraid if I go on I'll never be able to finish this account.
Continue my tale with rose colored glasses or bumming out with me.
