Peter Carl's grave in La Grange
Eventually home moves beyond the grave. Peter Carl outlived Amanda, remaining in Round Top until finally moving to live with a daughter in La Grange. It was here in 1866 that he died of typhoid fever.
My trip was over, the goodbyes at the picnic were said, and what would otherwise be called the drive back "home" began. As we crossed the Atchafalaya River basin in Louisiana, we made one last stop to look back towards Texas, back towards the family home denied our presence, and then continued on our way.
